Pet In-house Diagnostics
The Importance of Laboratory Testing
At Kelly Veterinary Clinic, we offer diagnostic testing for dogs and cats of all ages.
We recommend annual fecal testing to check for intestinal parasites. Some internal parasites can be transferred to humans so it’s important to perform this testing even if your pet isn’t showing signs or symptoms.
Blood and urine samples can also be sent to Idexx Laboratories for screening with timely results. These diagnostics may be recommended for pre-anesthetic purposes, or for elderly and aging patients looking to assess current organ function.
However, if your pet needs urgent results, we have in-house testing capabilities for a variety of samples. State-of-the-art in-house Idexx machines can run a variety of panels within minutes so that if we detect a problem, we can address it quickly.
Our valuable staff is trained to read a variety of microscopic slides including but not limited to; ear cytology, fecal cytology, blood film evaluation, and skin cytology.
Digital Radiography
To evaluate dogs and cats for issues related to the bones, joints, heart, lungs, and urinary systems, we often turn to our digital X-ray equipment to obtain the necessary information. We have a Digital X-ray system that outclasses traditional film X-ray in many ways:
- Allows us to produce sharper, higher-contrast X-ray images
- Requires less time positioning your pet, making for a less stressful experience
- All X-ray images are reviewed by outside specialists in seconds to give added value to your pet’s imaging
Ultrasound
We’re incredibly pleased to be able to offer ultrasounds in our hospital. This non-invasive procedure uses the latest technology to help us examine your pet’s heart and abdominal organs in real-time.
Ultrasounds provide a clear and detailed 3-D picture of soft tissue organs such as the liver, spleen, and kidneys. Ultrasounds also provide a live video of cardiac function and blood flow.
Our valued staff can perform a scan of your pet’s bladder whenever there are urine related concerns. They can also collect urine samples via ultrasound-guided cystocentesis, which is the gold standard. It keeps the sample sterile and free of outside contamination.
We can also use this tool for early pregnancy exams to assess things like fetal count, size, and heart rate.
